TOPIC: 'Cloning' a component

'Cloning' a component 22 May 2012 02:33 #2401

I'm looking for an easy way of 'cloning'/'repackaging an existing component.

We have a number of projects that have been configured/setup as components and I'm looking of 'copying' an existing component to a new component with a different name. That way I just need to modify some of the files to cater fro the new project.

Is this possible with Cook?

Hello Lister171254, welcome to Cook Self Service!

Short answer; No. There is no facility to 'clone/copy' a component within or as a part of Cook.

Longer answer; Yes. If you build your component with Cook Self Service you can download it (during your subscription period) and then begin the process of Copying or Cloning it. As to How To Clone a component your best bet is to search the Joomla! Forums for greater detail. I tried on your behalf but did not have much luck.

Have already done that for a fork !

If the component is well written with a good MVC structure, you can do that with a recent notepad++ or phpDesigner software.
=> change/replace the entry_name file such as comp_name.php, comp_name.xml ...
=> change/replace the classname keywords in all the files of the structure.

it could be done quicky.
