I have the redirect But not the state change.

Don't think any of it matters with the exit in the export.

I think the solution is to open a new browser window when sending to output and not a file so I can remove the exit

BTW, do you have a closing '}' in the function - it seems to be missing in the tutorial...?

If not working in new window, try adding header("Location: ".$file); after the fclose($fp);
