Just tried to downlad one of the tutorial builds, but I'm prompted to subscribe. I thought that is only required above 200pts.

Also, am not able to add a menu item as I'm told I only have access to my components

You can test your component in a sandbox before downloading it packaged up ready to install. The developer is responsive on the support forum.
